“Their illness is not in their minds, or in the color of their skin, or in the despair in their heart, or even in the money that they may or may not have. Their illness is honesty, for they live in a world of lies, ruled by those who surrendered all the good things that God gived them for money, living on stolen land, taken from people whose spirits dance all around us like ghosts.”
I learn a lot from this book. From two communities trying to survive a life in America. The immigrant Jews and African Americans life. So many conflicts, with very detailed descriptions of characters this book talks about racism, identity, kindness, and the sense of belonging.
It shows ambitions and sorrow, desperation to taste how life is. How human should be treated in the first place.
The many characters that were thrown away immediately sometimes confused me but thanks to the discussion I had in book club I can understand the topic and cases well. Such an interesting, eye-opening book.
