The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins
5.0
Whew. I think this might be the year I throw my hands up and admit that I am a HUGE sucker for a good Thriller (after swearing I was only into romance and li. fiction). This book was the tipping point, I was enraptured in this story right from the first chapter and couldn't help but devour it and all it's mysteries as soon as possible.
Inspired by Bronte's classic gothic, Jane Eyre, Hawkins delivers a twist on the classic with this magnificent thriller. I cannot recommend this book enough. Just when you think you've got the mystery figured out a twist lands to blindside you completely. Even once revelations are made, Hawkins keeps you on the edge of your seat, hungry and completely hanging off every word.
The ending brought about a *very* satisfactory twist to a favourite story of mine and I am in awe of this book. 100% a new favourite. I would say as a heads up for anyone wanting to read this after hearing "Jane Eyre retelling" manage your expectations slightly because while the inspiration is clear, this story is its own thing and not simply a modern retelling very much a twist from the original!! (That being said it definitely reminded me a Jane Eyr reread is desperately in order!!!)
