This is a stunning memoir written in prose and almost poetry like. It doesn’t read like a memoir but it’s stunning all the same. There’s dark themes, but Carmen Maria Machado tackles these personal issues head-on. She also strongly discusses the lack of queer-focused media and specifically queer stories that tackle emotional and physical abuse. Machado’s work is thought provoking and beautiful.
She reads the audiobook herself and the cadence of her voice is so soothing. I had gotten into a phase of enjoying full-cast audiobooks but I think this book is the full obsolete side of the spectrum but just as enjoyable. Definitely read the trigger warnings before picking this up, but I highly HIGHLY recommend this book.
