I thought this was such a brilliant cover and as I enjoyed another of the author's book, I took a chance on this one too. Now that I'm supposed to write a review, I'm not actually sure how to describe the book at all! I guess you could read the book description yourself which is pretty much what happened. The book did span over a number of years though so while the protagonist is 12yo at the beginning of the book, she was about 16, I think, by the end. It is both an interesting and scary premise of having ghosts/spirits hiding in yourself but I didn't actually find the book itself scary. There were thrilling bits but not really because of these spirits.
Makepeace is a character you really want to get behind. She is truly cunning though only us as readers are privileged to this particular view of her character. To others, she's beneath notice... to their detriment. I found the story itself rather slow but really liked the setting (during the English Civil War with a number of castles and secret rooms and passages!). Overall, just okay read for me.
