I would've liked it even darker. "Danny Coughlin's Bad Dream" and "Rattlesnakes" are both knockouts – it's truly a power move to put a 150-page police procedural novella into a short story collection, and proof that Stephen King still hasn't lost it. The other stories in this collection waver: some better than others, none of them bad necessarily, but also none of them really delivering as much of a commanding story as you'd hope. But when it's good, it's GOOD. Newfound fear of prams unlocked.
