Picking up after the events of the trials Oraya and Raihn are now married, but she is effectively a prisoner in her own home. They hate what each other has done, but know they need one another in order to overcome the threats to the kingdom. The majority of the book centres on their settling in to rule, and sorting out what their relationship is.
The first part of the book felt rather slow. We get alternating views so we know that things are not quite as straightforward as they appear, but it took a while to really establish what they stood for.
Alongside them developing their bond the story focuses on the hunt for the items Victor left behind in order to try to maximise their chances of beating those that would try to overthrow them. This allows us to see a little more of the dynamics between key characters, but also allows Oraya the opportunity to learn just why she is so important.
This definitely got better as it went on. I found myself skim reading the sections focused on the amazing sex Raihn and Oraya got to have - we get it, they’re suited! The way things were left with the intervention of the goddesses hints at something interesting in the pipeline.
