Let Me Hear a Rhyme by Tiffany D. Jackson
5.0
The idea of a teen's sister and best friends banding together to make his dream come true after he's dead seemed a little ridiculous but Tiffany D. Jackson managed to pull it off.
People handle grief in different ways and that was an element showcased in this book. Each character had a different reaction to Steph's murder and each character mourned his death differently. Steph's murder was shrouded in mystery for majority of the novel, leaving us to use the bits and pieces scattered throught the chapters to try and figure it out along side our main characters.
Throughout the story our main characters: Quadir,Jarrell, and Jasmine are slowly unraveled chapter by chapter until they are no longer two-dimensional, and we connect to them more and more in every chapter, until we are able to sympathise with them when more and more conflicts arise.
We learn about life in Brooklyn through the characters, through their interactions, actions and even their thought processes and inner monolouges. We get to see what it was like to be a black teenager growing up in the hood, before the technology we had today.
Credit should be given to Malik-16 for the awesome raps.
