The Deep by Alma Katsu
3.0
Off to a promising start, and very readable for me throughout, but failed to land in the end. This is billed as horror but I'd call it historical fiction with light supernatural and mystery elements that are left a little too ambiguous/unexplored to have proper punch. Similarly, there are hints of commentary on madness, sexism, class divides, and the occult in early 20th century, but they're more food for thought than coherent statements, another disappointment for me. The characters and atmosphere are well developed, but ultimately I was expecting something darker and more intricate from this premise.
I'm particularly interested and well-informed about Titanic, but maybe this book would be a better fit for a layperson with casual interest in the famous disaster(s; sister ship Britannic features here as well).
