A remarkable and painful little reflection on regret and mortality. Loved the disdain for people who uncritically adopt social norms. Was bored by the theological elements. But most of all, I was disturbed and caught off guard by how much this story of a 19th century Russian bureaucrat touched on my own trauma from watching a chronically ill person die and from becoming chronically ill myself. Chilling.
