Gateways to Abomination by Matthew M. Bartlett

4.0

Despite such dark subject matter, Bartlett has some beautiful prose reminiscent of Brian Emerson or Michael Wehunt.

These stories were weird, darkly funny, and cool. He’s created his own mythos which I believe is continued on with a second short story collection. I’ll be sure to read that one as well.

His stories were all interrelated and I think that made for a gratifying read. Recommended if you want some weird with your dark!

This line from the opening story made me do a double take—a preview of his writing style:

“Leaves fall like dry, dead angels, piling up against the leviathan broken bones of storm-savaged trees.”

P.S. The audiobook was narrated by Jon Padgett, the author of an equally awesome horror collection about ventriloquism. He’s a fantastic narrator.
