The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo

This type of story usually isn't my favourite. There is little world-building (which leaves my pea-sized brain confused), the writing is flowery and it's super, super atmospheric. I think I fall in the minority here, because whimsical, magical feeling books generally get low ratings from me. But I think it worked better in this than in other books I've read. In the beginning I felt like I had been thrown into a world and story in the middle of something important, but I had no idea what it was or why it was important. I caught on a few chapters in, but I still don't think I understood the point of this novella.
But with all that being said, the characters in this were really charming, and the inclusion of sapphic characters and a character that uses they/them pronouns was really nice. I think a lot of people could enjoy this, but I think I would recommend trying out a sample of this before investing in a copy of your own. But if the things I described above sound like your cup of tea, you'll probably love this!
