Long Time Coming: Reckoning with Race in America by Michael Eric Dyson

dark emotional hopeful informative reflective medium-paced

5.0

What I love about this book is that it caught me up and thoroughly discussed the past and recent Black victims of white violence (all at the time just too much for me to endure at once). Dyson does an amazing job individually talking to the individuals and drawing links from past and current events that surround their case.

He starts off addressing Emmett Till. About what happened to him and how he is sorry that his life was wrongly taken before it could even start. Dyson does a great job thoroughly breaking down and poetically discussing each persons events, you cannot help but become engrossed in the audio.

It felt like a three person conversation: Dyson, the reader and the unjust victim. You can see Emmett Till sitting across from you but he cannot speak. Michael Eric Dyson sits to your right. As the reader, I sat there acknowledging the person, occasionally nodding my head and/or not moving a muscle to let her words flow through me.

Do not let the size of this book fool you from the powerful and emotional words this holds. I have heard Dyson speak many times and am always transfixed on what he has to say. I hope he read all of his works that I plan on catching up on in the near future.
