The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
5.0
I was a little wary going into this. While I'm normally all for an enemies-to-lovers romance, I'm not too big on bully romances, so I wasn't sure how I was going to like this. I ended up really liking it, and feel like this one was done well. While Cardan didn't necessarily directly defend Jude, he's also not her biggest tormenter, and I think that that's what makes it work for me in this instance. It will be interesting to see how things develop from here.
I really enjoyed the worldbuilding and the atmosphere of the story, and it felt really reminiscent of The Spiderwick Chronicles ( [b:The Field Guide|444304|The Field Guide (The Spiderwick Chronicles, #1)|Tony DiTerlizzi|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1358701476l/444304._SY75_.jpg|1092293] also but Holly Black) which are books I grew up reading and loved. I'm really glad that I was able to find another Faerie book that I enjoyed.
I really liked seeing Jude's development throughout this book, from a character who Is barely able to defend herself to someone who was able to seize the crown of Faerie, even if it was indirectly and not for herself. I can't wait to see how she develops further in future books.
The twist at the end got me. I really wasn't expecting Madoc to turn out to be a villain, even if he did kill Jude and Taryn's parents and kidnaps them. I'm really looking forward to finishing this series and seeing how things unfold.
