I've been a Vera Brosgol fan for awhile, but I've always preferred her picture books to her long-form work. Until now that is. This book is magnificent. So many girls (and women) will be able to relate to Jane. Brosgol's commentary and message about appearance and the worth society assigns us because of it is timely and powerful. The ending wasn't exactly what I wanted
(I would have liked Jane to stay with the selkies in Jamie's hut above the sea)
, but it still worked. I also would have liked a little bit more at the end to confirm what was implied.
