Little Women: The Original Classic Novel Featuring Photos from the Film! by Louisa May Alcott

When I first started reading Little Women I read it slowly and was having a bit of trouble getting into it. By the time I got to around chapter 10 I could not put it down. I ended up reading it in a total of 9 days and I read it over my last winter break. It ended up being the last book I read in 2019.

My favorite chapter is chapter 10 in which the girls have a meeting with their secret society. This part I just found so heartwarming. They put so much effort into this society and it was honestly inspiring.
This book was just so raw and real. It addresses things such as anger problems in a mature way that proved that if you put your mind to it you can do anything.
Meg’s struggle with not being able to afford things her friends had was so good. It showed how even if she desired materialistic things she was able to be happy with her husband who she dearly loved.
The romantic part of me wishes that Jo and Laurie ended up together because of how in love with her she was, but another part of me says that Jo is a lesbian icon and only married Friedrich so that she’d feel “normal”.
Beth’s death was so heartbreaking and yet so necessary for the story. She was the good one. She was undoubtedly kind and wholesome. When she died her sisters felt so upset that fate had taken the person in their life who was most selfless. This tragedy is what pushed the sisters to be their best selves to honor Beth.
I love that Jo ended up having a boarding school at the end of the book. I thought it was very strange that it was only a school for boys because throughout the book she was very spoken about women’s rights so I’d assume she’d want girls to get an equal education.

Overall this was an amazing book that was heartwarming and inspiring. The character development was so good and the writing was beautiful. I’d also like to mention that I felt the 2019 movie was amazing. My friends and family who haven’t read the book felt that it was sort of vague at certain parts so I think they’d enjoy it more if they read the book.
