Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
2.0
Trigger warning: sexual assault
So basically this book has the same plot as the movie "Get Out" but instead of hypnotherapy, the creepy white people use magical mushrooms. If you watched the movie, you have read this book.
The first quarter of the book was decent and it felt like a slow-burn mystery but by the time I was halfway through the "plot" was still nowhere in sight. By 60% I was so bored and ready to DNF but the positive reviews on this book told me to stick with it for the ending.
The ending was not worth it and was just a mess.
I am confused as to why this book was called "Mexican Gothic" because 90% of the book takes place in a British manor with a predominantly white cast doing creepy white people things. Also, there was nothing "gothic" about this book because it wasn't scary in the slightest.
