The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
5.0
This reminded me why I used to love and devour YA.
It is definitely, and most assuredly YA, so there are some silly angsty bits, a LOT of inner soul searching, and a love triangle (though not really, and the trope is turned on its head quite nicely), but I pretty much ate this up.
The characters and background story are fantastic and different.
This story, and don't shoot me please, *feels* like some of the best parts of what made Twilight popular, BUT has a self-propelled, ambitious, female protagonist at the center. A human girl in the magical and often cruel world of fairy, who is desperate to stay there and fit in, even while she's constantly threatened and tormented. While the murderous fairy court moves around her, she is creating some pretty sophisticated machinations of her own.
For my conservative peeps (hi mom): no F-bombs, hooray! Probably some other mild swearing I didn't notice. There is a token bi character, though she didn't feel token (she's a major supporting character). No sex scenes. Lots of alcohol and some kind of fairy drug substance.
