I'll be honest, I found this book very odd. The ending was shocking to say the least, I never would have seen that coming. It's so out of the box from what you typically get with suspense/thriller type books. But the whole beginning, probably 80% of the book, just didn't really have any lead-up to what what coming. There were a few very small things here and there that connected to the ending, but overall it was just kind of bland. Basically just a couple moves to a town, everyone there is super weird, and the wife, Joan, doesn't fit in. She makes weird food (maybe it's just a Minnesota thing but hamburger & soup covered in potato chips? sounds gross), she's not likeable, nor is anyone else in Lilydale, and she isn't even doing a very good job at the article she's trying to write on the kid that went missing. She was so far off the truth it's not even funny. As much as I disliked a majority of this book, Jess Lourey knows how to shock you with a twist, I will give her that. Never in a million years would I have guessed Polly, the missing kid, was actually Joan, and that everyone else in this weird little town, including her husband and soon to be baby, were created through generations of incest, all sharing the same bloodline (yes that is literally the title but how on Earth would you expect to go from a missing child investigation to incest???) I still have so much faith in this author but this book just wasn't for me.
