The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst

4.5

This is a really magical cosy fantasy novel, meeting both meanings of 'magical'. There's a hefty dose of whimsy, with sentient plants, winged cats and spells that have unexpected results. It also felt like the author included everything that might make you smile in a cosy fantasy, from romance to cottagecore to magical companions.

The comparisons with Legends and Lattes will be inevitable as the storyline does involve the main character moving to an out of the way location, opening a shop and forming friendships and found family. However it differs a lot in both plot and atmosphere.

I really enjoyed this book. It's cosy and heartwarming and as the story progresses becomes quite gripping too (there was a slower start). The romance was fairly nice, but was not centre stage enough to be off-putting for fans of cosy fantasy who don't necessarily enjoy romantasy. Basically if you want a book to curl up with and to put a smile on your face, this might be it.
