Oh man! This was a really good book! I very much enjoyed my time disappearing into the world that Lex has created with all these lovable characters.
The whole premise of the book being about our two main characters, Gwen and Art being betrothed to each other but hating one another and also! They are in love with other people, which is just so fun! And then those other people being of the same gender! Which makes the book like 100 times better! The world building is absolutely amazing and I feel spoiled with it.
I had a hard time in beginning liking Gwen but I slowly warmed up to and found myself becoming found of her bratty attitued. And I loved her character development, to see her gain self confidence and also letting people in was so wonderful!
And Arthur, I loved him from the start. A sad, slightly alcoholic gay man who tries to hide his low self esteem and self hatred by coming off as self centered and cocky. This is exactly how I like my fictional men, just perfect.
And then we have Bridget and Gabriel, two characters who I absolutely adore but also feel like were given the short end of the stick.
I loved Bridget and how her relationship with Gwen developed. Their scenes together were some of the best in the book. However I do also feel like we, the reader, didn't really get to know her at all, besides the stuff we already knew about her in the begining.
And with Gabriel I feel like we got the opposite. We get to know him really well and in detail but his relationship with Arthur needed more development and more show not tell. I still absolutely love these characters and they were still well written, but I also feel like more was needed.
Now Sidney was my favorite character throughout the whole book! I loved the banter he and Arthur had with each other. Sid is such an amazing and loyal friend, I adored his relationship with Arthur so much!
Sadly this book did disappoint me in the last part. The book starts off quite slow which i didn't mind, but then halfway through the story gets super interesting and more side plots start to take shape and I felt like it keept getting more and more interesting after every chapter! But then the war broke out and I lost all of my previous excitement. It dropped and didn't recover. I was expecting a big fight between the characters and then Gwen and Gabriel going to talk to their parents about queer love, the letters that Arthur found and possibly calling off the wedding. That did not happen, and if it did, we do not get to see it because the book ends before that conversation even happens.
I think because the story is quite lighthearted and fun up until this point, I didn't see it taking such a gruesome turn and that really threw me off! I really did not see it coming at all.
But even if the ending was something I didn't see coming, I very much enjoyed this book. It was funny, exciting, investing and really well written.
