Nubia: the Awakening by Clarence A. Haynes, Omar Epps
3.0
An urban fantasy based in New York but flooded with Nubian culture is a truly unique undertaking. The voice throughout the novel is strong and determined.
It tackles themes of social justice, exploitation and oppression, as well as cultural history and strength in a community. These two authors have created a story that is fierce and speaks loudly. And while the characters didn't speak with quite the same strength, the character development is solid and I don't doubt there will be some readers that will fall in love with the undeniable strength that has been woven into the creation of each and every one. A special shout-out to an incredibly well-constructed audiobook, as well. With a full cast, it's an engaging listen.
