The Startup Wife by Tahmima Anam

3.0

I started this book and was immediately enjoying it after a couple of chapters. It set up the story nicely, I was intrigued about what was going to happen, I think the writing was really good, and the characters were interesting. Unfortunately, it kind of plateaued after a while and my interest waned a little bit.

The concept was extremely unique, I did like the dystopian almost futuristic and very nerdy aspects of it. Though I didn’t always fully comprehend what was being said in this book from a tech perspective, a lot of it was very cool. This was something I’ve never really read about before, and I could see it as a really good adaptation on screen. It’s funny because at one point the characters are watching Balck Mirror, but in some ways this book also feels like an episode of that. It also vaguely reminded me of the book ‘We Had to Remove this Post’ in some ways.

I liked the characters and think they had a really interesting set up, but I feel like the author missed a giant opportunity to do more with them. Through the protagonist we do see snippets and explore to an extent racism, identity, sexism, culture, and generational pressure but to me that never really reached a peak. Everything was so very surface level that the book didn’t really seem to have a hard hitting or substantial effect on me. I can see what it was trying to do and what it was trying to say, but it didn’t make those statements as boldly as I would have liked.

Plot wise it was fairly interesting and as I said I did enjoy it, but this books was just lacking for me. It was also quite slow in pacing, so that might have also contributed to my enjoyment being a little bit stunted.
