Acceptance by Jeff VanderMeer

4.0

Acceptance brings a lot of closure to the table. It also raises more questions than it answers but it's a generally satisfying end to the Southern Reach trilogy.

It's a pretty ambitious book in terms of style. There are several different stories that take place over several different timelines and are told from various different perspectives. To top it all off, the content of the book is also very strange. There are layers of hidden messages and symbolism. At some points it's hard to tell if the confusion being generated by the author is deliberate or accidental. What actually happened to Control right at the end? Did he morph into something else and attempt some kind of righteous sacrifice? Or was it all nonsense wrapped in the shroud of being emotionally impactful? It's hard to tell sometimes.

The things I loved about Annihilation are present here. The apocalyptic use of language is great. Mr. VanderMeer sure does know how to turn on the creepy, surrealist feelings. What ends up happening to the biologist is really grand and wonderful.

If you've read the first two then you really ought to finish it trilogy.
