Recursion by Blake Crouch

I think that writing a time travel book is tricky business. The characters have to be interesting, the rules have to make sense and on top of it all the story has to be enjoyable to read.

For the first two thirds of this book I was pretty into it. Learning the rules of the world with Helena and Barry was a good bit of fun. I was enjoying the roller coaster ride and the new twists that kept getting piled on. The tone of the book starts to shift as it goes on towards a much more violent escapade, and then it changes gears again into a weird love story that doesn't fit in with the rest of the book.

Blake Crouch is writing what feels like a pitch for a streaming service. I think there are a lot of elements here that would be very popular to a mass audience. For the most part, the time travel aspects of the book are explained in a way that makes sense. The idea of dead memories is a neat twist.
