The Butterfly Garden by Dot Hutchison
4.0
I like to go into books knowing as little as possible these days, but occasionally that means I'm very taken aback by the actual contents when I get around to reading said book, as in this case. Luckily the surprise worked for me, but there are a lot of CWs here (rape, kidnapping, physical violence, parental neglect, and various other traumas) that might be more off-putting for other readers. For the most part I think Hutchison handles these topics well, with a lot of spot-on commentary about trauma and violence against women. It was only the framing of the narrative as a sort of dual timeline that didn't quite work for me; I think it was a clever structural idea in theory, but the conversations linking those two threads of the narrative together felt so unnatural and unrealistic to me in actuality. Even so, this was propulsive enough that I flew through it in just two sittings and would recommend the read to anyone who can stand the subject matter.
