I was not entirely sure about reading this, mainly because I enjoyed the first book enough but wasn't sure I wanted to see more of the world and the characters. But upon opening and beginning to read it, I quickly learned that this was a hugely interesting take on what I felt could have been a pretty fine sequel. I loved getting to see writings from people other than Lauren - to see her daughter talk about her with knowledge that the reader didn't yet have and see glimpses of writings from other characters was hugely satisfying. And the story went in a dark direction, and lost me a little with a lot of the philosophical and religious specifics and ideas, but kept this core of humanity. Human suffering and human survival and human spirit.

Absolutely fascinating and enjoyable read that I am so glad I have read!
