I enjoyed this as I read but did wonder what all the fuss was about. But then... by the end I felt that the effect of the thing overall had a quiet power (and that, after all, is what distinguishes a good novel from a well-written novel). This was maybe helped along by reading the sensitive and sympathetic introduction by David Nicholls.
