Camille sneaks her way into Versailles to win money gambling with the lords and ladies of France. Using magic she is able to disguise herself and fit in amongst the elite of France. However, magic comes with a price, and through her friends at Versaille, Camille learns more about the dark history of magic in France. The magic system in this book is unique and I like how it was tied into the political history of France but it is just not enough to keep you satisfied. I enjoyed the setting of this book immensely but I feel like the plot was too basic. Also, at 400+ pages, it was far too long for the small plot it had. This book based in France on the cusp of the Revolution and you barely see any of the actual beginnings of the French Revolution. There are so many repetitious scenes of Camille gambling in Versaille that just bring the pace of the book to a slow crawl. The ending also felt slapped on to add some drama and excitement. My copy of this book is gorgeous and since I own the first edition with the original title (which is superior to the renamed edition), I will be keeping it on my shelf. I do not know if I will be picking up the sequel.
