This story follows Deka a sixteen year old girl who is to undergo a purity ritual to make sure her blood is red and not gold.  In her religion gold blood means she is impure and subject to a death mandate.  When her village is attacked before her ritual it is discovered that her blood is gold.  She saves her village but is killed for her gold blood.  Since she doesn’t stay dead they kill her over and over in different ways. After dying nine times she is rescued and taken to the capital to be trained to fight the Deathshrieks that are attacking a lot of her country. Turns out she is even more special than the rest of the girls like her that were rescued to also be trained to fight.  She undergoes many changes during her training and discovers many secrets that were kept from her that make her like she is.  Questioning her faith and what she has always been taught leads her to the truth of her world.  With the help of her friends she changes their world forever.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It is very diverse and merges different cultures to create a whole new world.  It started off at a fast pace but slowed down in the middle and I almost DNF ed it then it took off.  If you can get through the middle you will love this.
