The DUFF: Designated Ugly Fat Friend by Kody Keplinger

5.0

I can understand why people don't like this book. It has it's weak spots. But nevertheless, I really enjoyed reading it and it put me out of my reading slump.

The story is about Bianca Piper, a seventeen year-old highschool senior. She's cynical, bitter, sarcastic and doesn't care what everybody things about her. She's true to herself and knows exactly what she wants. Her thinking is very mature for her age. One evening, when she is partying with her friends Jessica and Casey - well, her friends are dancing, Bianca just sits at the bar and wants to go home - man-slut and arrogant asshole Wesley Rush calls her DUFF: Designated. Ugly. Fat. Friend. Bianca spilts her drink all over him and since that night, a enemie-with-benefits relationship slowly starts to grow...

I would recommend knowing not too much about the story when you jump into it, it could make the whole book boring to you.
Center of the story is the more-or-less-existing realationship between Bianca and Wesley and yes, of course everyone can outguess what happends but that doesn't make it less enjoyable to read! In fact, I was super curious how this relationship develops. Both characters experience different downs and highs and the reader get to know them and their family background. Most of it might be cliché and the side characters remain quiet flat, but I can overlook that because firstly, the author was seventeen when she wrote this book, and secondly, I could see that she tried to give every character more depth.

The story line itself seems to be nothing special - and it isn't - but in my opinion, the main character really differs to the normal teenage protagonist. It was pleasant to read and I enjoyed every single sassy line. I read this book in three sittings and I really enjoyed it!
