The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake
2.0
Maybe 2.5 stars.
The first disappointment of the year, it hurt that it was on this book as it was one of my most anticipated reads, so I'm bitter.
First of all and just from reading the first few pages, I knew that this was probably going to be a no for me but still. The characters had potential to be so much more fleshed out and to show what they were capable of, but the interactions between them felt just like pretentious dialogue that intended to be meaningful and deep but that lacked substance in all the places where it should've been exploited. We hardly see them doing anything other than be wary of one another and having meaningless and fruitless conversations.
For that matter the plot was thin and frail and pretty inconsistent, though I could have dismissed it if the magic system had been properly explained; but we are given tidbits of it and these are solely provided by some characters whereas others are rudely shove aside (Reina you deserved better).
The writing I could have gotten used to if I have had room to breathe and if I were not constantly bombarded with pretentious and philosophical questions that lead nowhere in this book; imo instead of helping the reader to understand they served only for more confusion and ultimately, for boredom.
This is just my opinion and I now the book is extremely popular and beloved, but I'm certainly not continuing with the rest of the series.
