Whiskey Tango Foxtrot by David Shafer

I very much enjoyed WTF. It was fun - I would say that I could put it down, I just didn't want to, it had very engaging, sympathetic, and real characters, and it was very well-written in way that was unique and interesting but not at all opaque.

The story is almost entirely told by three characters: Leila, Mark, and Leo. Leila is working for an NGO in Burma and stumbles across what appears to be a military installation that she really shouldn't have. The installation is managed by some secret, evil, and extremely powerful global organization that is keenly interested in remaining secret. When Leila starts investigating, they make things very rough for her, and her adventure to escape from this secret organization and discover its secrets begins. On her way, she encounters Mark and Leo. Mark is a flash-in-the-pan author who unknowingly has some connections to the evil cabal chasing Leila. Leo is an alcoholic in a rehab facility who, in a fit of paranoia, actually discovered clues the mysterious global organization. Their stories weave together in a beautiful way to tell a story about global conspiracies and real people struggling in the world - not a very common feat.

I was hugely impressed with this book, and I hope for more great things from the author, David Shafer. My only complaints were that the book seemed to be missing some pieces. I don't mean the ending, which I've heard a lot of people complain about. The ending is surprisingly abrupt, but it feels like a conclusion that works, despite not tying up all the loose ends. Still, there seemed to be details and characters and stories that were introduced but never really followed up. It makes me feel like there was so much more to this story, so much more that could have made the book really transcendent. Still, WTF is a very strong book that I would recommend.
