A densely compact history of this famous city. I enjoyed the clear-eyed unsentimentality of the author's style, and learned a lot. The effect overall was rather depressing - a cronicle of 1000 years of the usual catalogue of selfishness, greed, and self-aggrandisement that is human nature in governance.  But   I am glad I read it
