They Hate Each Other is utterly delightfully funny while also giving some real depth to its wonderful characters. I had high hopes for this book which it fully delivered on and then some!
They Hate Each Other takes enemies-to-lovers, fake dating, a chaos gremlin disaster MC, another stress baking disaster MC, opposites attract, practice kissing, and laugh-out-loud funny scenes, and effortlessly combines all that with more sobering topics like poverty, parentification, loneliness, and anxiety.
Going in, I didn't expect this kind of depth from what looked to be just a cute YA book but I loved it. It took what could've easily been a fairly cliche and predictable fake-dating story and elevated it to a truly great book with wonderfully threedimensional characters you can't help but fall in love with.
It was still funny and sweet and cute, but it was also so much more than that and seeing these guys struggle hurt because I got really invested very fast.
Jonah and Dylan are my new adopted sons! These grumpy bi kings are both such idiots (affectionate), and very different to each other personality-wise and when it comes to their socio-economic backgrounds. And yet they work so well together and understand each other in ways neither of them have ever experienced before! I love them both so much, and I adore their friends, and Jonah's sisters, too.
The characters in They Hate Each Other truly shine and the book is such a great read.
Also, I'm an absolute sucker for a good italic "oh" moment. This book didn't just give me that, it gave me an "oh no" which was even better and had me literally screaming with the dumbest grin on my face.
I already know I'll be rereading this book as soon as I get my hands on a physical copy. I really need to dedicate a highlight colour to just the things Dylan refers to Jonah as ("writhing gremlin" is my current fave)
