4.25

Plot: 3/5
Character: 4/5
Relationships: 2.5/5
World-Building: 2.5/5
Genre: 4/5

Plot: Like it wasn't amazing but it wasn't bad. The fact it was under 300 pages defiantly made it worth it. Unlike a lot of other classics, it didn't ramble too much and all the action happened over like 2 days. It was relatively uninteresting what this guy was doing (getting kicked out of school and then just feeling sad for himself wandering around New York) but it worked. It was nice that it all kind of came full circle right at the end with him (probably?) in a mental institution. Again it wasn't particularly clear what was going on.
Character: Well the MC was a bit of an entitled idiot who got on my nerves but like in a good way. He wasn't likeable so that made him interesting to read about. His internal monologue was funny, annoying, offensive and relatable all in equal parts. Of course, all the other characters paled in comparison because the book wasn't about them. However the misogyny defiantly dragged down my rating quite significantly, I know it was a different time but I just can't excuse half the stuff this guy said.
Relationships: Kinda boring, this guy can't maintain a stable relationship (romantic, platonic or familial) with anyone so there really isn't much to write about. I thought he and his sister were funny though.
World-Building: I liked the New York at Christmas setting - pretty cool. I know nothing about New York but it was cool to read about different bits, idk the world wasn't really the focus of this book.
Genre: As a classic, this book was better than a lot of the other ones. It was short, thank god. And read like J. D. Salinger's personal "Burn Book" from Mean Girls but it was cool. I liked the funky writing style and it didn't take too long for me to read.
