A Study in Cyborgs by W.R. MacNeill
3.5
Delightfully voicey and keenly propulsive, this science fiction reimagining of a Holmesian mystery does credit to its source material while throwing open its doors. The mystery's structure was absolutely fantastic and kept the book perfectly paced. Action and red herrings kept me reading, but the voice swept me up from the first. The genre blend created an incredibly satisfying experience, with the worldbuilding perfectly enriching this wonderfully executed mystery. A couple of minor worldbuilding elements didn't quite hold up to deliberate scrutiny, and narration sometimes flirted too keenly with idiosyncrasy, but take this romp in the spirit it was meant and you're guaranteed to have a good time. In three words: Pacey, propulsive, imaginative.
