Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

4.0

I can't believe this novel is only the author's debut!

Eleanor is this really weird person, who's very specific about her routine and the way she does things. She never laughs. She doesn't understand humor nor slang. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Cathleen Mccaren and she really added a lot to my enjoyment! she enunciated her words immaculately and that reflected Eleanor's personality beautifully (it took time getting used to the accent though).
Any-who, the entire book you're wondering about what made Eleanor the way she is.
You know she's got mommy issues, you know she suffered through a house fire long ago, you know she's been shuffled between foster homes, you know her mother's probably a psychopath. But you don't know if her mother is filthy rich, if that is why Eleanor has memories of eating really fancy food. You wonder if they travelled to extravagant places, if that is why Eleanor is so polite and proper.
But all of that is sort of thrown into the background! You see the *effects* of it on Eleanor's daily life, but still, you are reading about her CURRENT life!
for the first 3/4ths of the books, that is.
And then the author goes and starts dropping the bombs on you. It's almost what you expected but much bigger, more shocking!

Everything comes together quickly at the end (not rushed at all though).

Ahhh. This book hits the spot. Even though it wasn't what I was looking for when I asked for YA books about mental health.
It's wonderful on its own.

P.S: I just read the book's description on goodreads, and it doesn't reflect it at all. it makes it feel like a romcom, but it's the furthest thing away from it.
