Circles and Squares: The Lives and Art of the Hampstead Modernists by Caroline MacLean

informative medium-paced

I really enjoyed this despite not really liking the work of this group of artists. It's well-researched and written and the characters are brought to life. I must confessed to be a little shocked at the utter selfishness of most of the people in their attitude to family and relationship. But I think the book gives a sense of the joy in embracing free love and new attitudes after the horror of the first world war, and an idealism which ended with the second.
