4.5 *I actually read a version that has this book with Dracula and Dr Jekyll in it and an intro by Stephen King, but it maddens me that it counts as 1 book, so I’m splitting them up.
As an Indigenous person, I always get a bitter taste in my mouth when I see language demeaning the Native community; especially when it’s a few throwaway lines with no narrative links, that could’ve easily been omitted. And Clerval literally wanting to go help with the colonization of India?? No thank you. The one factor I saw that helped Mary Shelley’s case is that she wrote the creature to sympathize with Native Americans massacred by colonizers when he was learning world history.
The premise and story were much stronger than depictions we see of “Frankenstein” [the creature] in popular media. As someone who hates spoilers, I hate that we would get awarning that this person or that was going to die next, right before it details how they died in the next chapter!
