What can I even say. I love Ann Patchett and this book did not disappoint. The premise is basic, the story sounds simple, but Patchett makes it magical. The COVID lockdown has brought all three of Lara and Joe Nelson’s 20-something daughters back to their cherry farm in Northern Michigan, where the daughters spend the summer picking cherries and learning from their mother about her romance with a now-famous actor Peter Duke when Duke and Lara were young and starring in a summer stock production of Our Town. The book explores the relationship between parents and children and the lives parents lived before their children arrived. The writing is luminous and spare and descriptive all at once. Patchett is a master at exploring relationships and in each novel she gets better. And the references to Our Town were a bonus- I re read the play just before reading the book, and that was a bonus.
