Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe

This book was very groundbreaking in its content matter and I am so glad that the author was able to tell eir story in a fairly well done comic. Personally I found the author’s personal feelings about sex and desire to be presented in too much of an… objective way? I am easily frustrated by aspec people implying allos are dirty or gross or don’t make sense or whatever. “Why have sex when you can have cake?” etc lol. Especially as a genderqueer allo person with much different struggles related to “same sex” attraction. But that is a touchy subject for me personally, and maybe it is for you too, but it’s not necessarily a flaw with the story and more of a disconnect with me as a specific reader. Either way- it takes a lot of guts and honesty to make a book like this and I have an intense respect for the author and eir work… even if I find it a bit corny lol. A 2.5 star read for me, but I won’t rate it because I do not want it to negatively affect the book’s overall rating. Especially since there are so many bad faith bigoted reviews rating this based on their hateful political beliefs. To those bad faith bigots, you clearly need to read this book again and practice empathy. Also the book is not nearly as “graphic” as these bigots would like you to believe, they also seem to hold the opinion that any book with pictures is equivalent to a picture book for toddlers. The book is YA, and the “sexuality” of the book is so unbelievably mild and inoffensive. About as provocative as a sex ed class lol. Which these people also violently oppose so they simply cannot be taken seriously!!!
