The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien
3.0
i’m finally working my way through the lotr series, five years after reading the hobbit. tolkien is an incredible narrator, his descriptions rope you into the story from the beginning. despite this, his descriptions are also a slightly weak point for me, as they are so extensive that i found myself getting distracted from the plot. i ended up having to get the audiobook and listen instead, which i only ever do if i’m struggling through the author’s writing. i do however absolutely love tolkien’s world building and characters (aragorn is my personal favourite), and his descriptions are still vivid, if drawn out.
i love the plot of these books; i know this because i broke a rule of mine, and didn’t read the books before seeing the films. i’ve watched them almost yearly since i was little, and fell in love with the series. however, i will say that the plot is a lot more detailed and involves many additional characters, subplots and scenes, which i didn’t entirely appreciate. generally, i hate when book scenes are cut for the movies, but the makers of the film adaptations did a wonderful job of leaving out unnecessary or boring parts, which made the films much more digestible. this novel simply seemed too long, but i have few complaints aside from that, and i thoroughly enjoyed following the journey of the fellowship!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
