Severance by Ling Ma
3.75
Didn't blow me away as hoped; took me until about halfway through the book to get into its project, and steadily grew in my esteem from there. My favourite parts by far were flashbacks; I enjoyed Candace's rumination on her family, especially her parents, and her flashbacks to her office work days much more than any of the modern day plot, to the point where my disappointment was palpable when the timeline leapt ahead. There are some clever tricks here, and I was pleased to see them. There's no doubt there's skill here, and I was ultimately able to appreciate the craft; but appreciating the craft is my main response. My main issue with this book is that it feels very MFA-ey, by which I mean that it feels over-edited to the point almost of sanitization of style. The whole time while reading I had the sense that this could have been an uglier book; I would have enjoyed an uglier book much more. I guess as an alienated millennial myself (albeit for different reasons), I was looking for something more than banal familiarity here. That said, banal familiarity is arguably and emphatically the book's entire point.
