The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11 by Garrett M. Graff

5.0

This is incredible. The first-person accounts are heartfelt and harrowing, but even beyond the words themselves the whole book is laid out in such a thoughtful and thorough way that it manages to dig deep while also covering a wide scope of experiences and effects. Some of the details are painful to contemplate (and to view- there are both color and black-and-white photos alongside the text), but nothing included here is gratuitous or manipulative. It's as much a snapshot of humanity as of history; highly recommend.
