The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

challenging informative sad medium-paced

5.0

My biggest regret is not reading this sooner. This has been on my list to read for a long time and it was excellent. Skloot does a great job tying the story of Henrietta and her family in with how HeLa cells have changed modern medicine. This book was both fascinating and sad due to the fact that many in the Lacks family lived in poverty and never knew what a big deal Henrietta's cells are. This book also really makes you think about the state of tissue and cell research and what it means both to science and to the "donors." Skloot makes the science very accessible and I loved the human aspect her travels and interviews with Deborah. This book deserves all the hype and praise, and I highly recommend it.
