Francesca Woodman: Portrait of a Reputation by Drew Sawyer, Nora Burnett Abrams

5.0

While this might not be the best place to start with Francesca Woodman, it kind of was for me -- and I don't at all regret it. The young woman we meet in these pages is silly, loyal, nervous, eager, clever -- in other words, like many college students. Of course, this one was also insanely talented and ambitious. The half-formed impression I had of her before picking this book up was of a depressed, deeply serious, committed artist. And actually, she was all those things. But George Lange shows us a different side of her in these pages and scraps -- someone much more human, less mythical, a girl who actually had fun doing what she was so good at...who was always trying to figure out the best way to get her point across. This book is deeply moving. And sad, because we know how her story ended. But here, she seems happy, and that makes the act of reading these pages intimate and special. Highly recommended.
