American Royals by Katharine McGee
5.0
I came here to read this book for one reason, and one only: THE DRAMA.
And boy did this book serve.
This is peak drama. This book is what my drama-dreams are made of. I had flashbacks of my awfully unrealistic high school daydreams. It gave me exactly what I wanted.
Is this book smart and crazy deceptive? No. This book has drama, cute boys and the very definition of what I feel royalty pressure feels like.
I adored Beatrice, she can come off as cocky and “holier than thou” but she also has a very grounded aura and I loved reading her perspective. Her romance in this book is what I LIVED for. I want more.
Sam and I can be best friends. Truly. Actually I think my best friend is a Sam. She is completely driven by her need for freedom. She is driven by all that others say she cannot be. Sam is a person you can count on to diffuse a serious situation eloquently.
Nina is someone I want to be. I want to be in love with the Prince. But like only for a day. I couldn’t stand the spotlight. And I guess that is why I have an extra soft spot for her.
Now Daphne is someone I would happily walk all over. Which tells me this character was written very well. She comes off conceited, purposeful and very gold digger-y. Which she literally admits to 5 second in. My biggest issue with this book was how did NO ONE other than her and the Prince’s bff see exactly what she is upto? The fact that she will go to crazy lengths to get the crown sets her up as a good villain.
All in all, a good royal fluffy book. Filled with emotion, drama and romance. And maybe some angst. Ok maybe more than some. Anyway, pick it up but treat it as a stand-alone cause the sequel is not worth it.
My favorite quote:
« Writers got to pick the endings of their novels, but Beatrice wasn’t living a story. She was living history, and history went on forever »
Special mention:
« The point of forgiveness is to recognize that someone has hurt you, and to still love them in spite of it »
