Three children go into the woods near their home to play. Hours after they have been reported missing, one of the boys is found in bloodstained clothing. He remembers nothing. There is no sign of the other missing children.
Fast forward a few years and the surviving boy, now going by the name of Rob, is part of Dublin’s murder squad. Only one person, his partner Cassie, is aware of his past. When he and his partner are called to the discovery of a young girl’s body in the same woods where he was found, it is not without some reason that they look for links between the cases.
The young girl, Katy, was assaulted and there are a number of lines of enquiry. Rob walks an increasingly fraught line between investigating Katy’s murder and trying to get answers about what happened to his friends.
I find it improbable that Rob’s secret would not be known by those in authority. It also seems unlikely that he would have not been kicked off the case as he increasingly seems to be struggling. However, the story keeps us intrigued.
There was nothing particularly new about the investigation. It allows us to gain some insight into both Cassie and Rob. While we remain unsure what actually happened to him, they were intriguing characters.
