A series that I think I would have enjoyed a lot as a younger reader. Told from the viewpoint of a pet cat that is allowed to join the wild cats living nearby, this is a tale of treachery that excites when it needs to.
The story begins slowly with our pet cat Rusty watching the woods and dreaming of something more exciting. After a chance encounter with a wildcat he is asked whether he would like to train as a warrior with the clan.
What follows tells the story of warring factions and backstabbing treachery from the viewpoint of the cats involved. While I didn’t particularly find the recounts of mouse kills and hunting that exciting, it was easy to get caught up with the dynamics of the factions.
I like the relationship that develops between Yellowface and Firepaw. His sense of fairness and honour suggests he will become pivotal to the clan in the inevitable disorder that is to come.
