The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
5.0
Any review I write about this book will just not do it the justice it deserves. The true story of how a woman who died in the early fifties had cancerous cells biopsied and through science became the most famous cells to produce vaccines especially Polio. The woman was Henrietta Lacks and reading her story of the rapid growth of her tumour, her illness and her treatment, and ultimately her death is harrowing and horrifying. The subsequent production of her cells (HELA cells) produced a phenomenon in science known as immortal cells. This books covers the story of Henrietta Lacks, her family, her daughter Deborah and a history of science. It's also a story of heartbreaking honesty, misinformation, mistrust and love. You have to read this book. It is very readable and will grip you from the start.
